Maya Ghazal was the first refugee pilot. She fled her home country Syria and to London. She became enthralled with aviation. She earned a private license and then got her commercial license.
Maya knew how difficult it was for refugees to become a pilot. She felt discrimination as a pilot but she pursued this course in her life. When she entered the cockpit people would stare at her. They were shocked that women dressed like Maya would be their pilot. She proved that she was a competent pilot and she became accepted as a pilot.
This woman who escaped from a war-torn company soon became a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Maya also was a Goodwill Ambassador and an engineer for the non-profit Manufacturing Centre.
She came a long way and is an unusual woman who worked hard to make her dream to be a pilot come true. Her main goal was to help other refugees to live a better life.

They Dared To Fly In a Man's World 
Nour Utayim, also a Syrian refugee who fled with her family to Canada, achieved her PPL prior to Maya. There is also another Syrian refugee who may also have earned her PPL around the same time as Nour. They would have been about a year prior to Maya.
Maya was the first Syrian refugee to earn her PPL in the UK.
